Encaustic Mixed Media: marks and patterns Class Workshop -class is full
La Grange Art League
In this class we explore working with encaustic paints, pigment (oil) sticks, collage applications, and other forms of mixed media with encaustic. Taking cues from the natural world around us, we will draw inspiration from patterns appearing from everything from leaves to rust.
Each class will build upon the skills from the prior week – so students should be prepared to work on paintings over multiple sessions. We will have one class making our own rusted and dyed papers to include in our works. Each class will include an informal group critique, as well as one on one time to talk about layout, composition, and color.
A $45 supply fee will be due at the first class to cover shared materials, tools, and paints, students will need to supply their own medium and substrates. See supply list for details.

Photo Encaustic: Advanced Image Alterations
This workshop will explore ways to further alter our photographic images to include in our paintings. The first day will start with a series of exercises on sample images and papers to explore methods of image alterations such as painting with water media, inks, image deconstruction, even stitching and collage. After we explore these alterations, Sarah will consult with students individually on the images they want to work with and we will the print on site with a variety of paper types. The remainder of the workshop will be a combination of demonstrations of ways to work with encaustic and student work time. Throughout the workshop we will focus on working with monochromatic or black and white photos in order to explore various other materials and methods to add in controlled color and tones. Building layer upon layer to create rich and tactile surfaces that will push final works into a true sense of the term mixed media.
Experience with encaustic is not needed for this class, however, prior art marking experience will be helpful.
We will be limiting registration to 5 students to give everyone a safe distance to work.

Encaustic Collage and Image Transfers
Encaustic and paper are an incredibly versatile match and, with the addition of
pigment sticks and other materials, we will create works with an optical depth,
luminosity, and a painterly quality. Paper will be the foundation of our pieces which will serve as rich backgrounds for transferring photographic images on the surface.
Basics of studio safety, substrate options,
painting techniques, and archival work methods will be covered. All base
mediums and paints as well as eco-dye supplies will be provided, but students
will be encouraged to bring a variety of found papers and other materials to use.
No prior experience with encaustic painting required, but general art-making
experience is helpful.
